A step ahead of the average deck builder
Platinum Decking will build the foundation of your deck better and more sound than anyone. First of all, we “overbuild,” your frame, not just build with a “what’s absolutely needed” materials list. As a result, we promise a safe and sturdy frame that is built with the best lumber from the best lumberyards. Also, we work alongside Home Depot to ensure all the right fasteners, hangers, hurricane clips, and finishing nails are used to secure your frame for decades.
Platinum Decking uses cutting edge technology that other companies don’t. Rather than concrete footings that can shift over time, we use diamond piers as footings. Due to diamond piers, your frame won’t shift over time with frost heave and other adverse weather. The technology features a concrete pier that has openings for four 50” rods. Our crew will jackhammer four 50” rods into the ground, cross-hatching and “rooting” the pier like a tree roots into the earth. It is designed for the Midwest conditions. Seems like it will be hard to find a local deck builder that knows more about these footings than Platinum Decking!
Once the frame is built, we will lay beautiful Trex, Azek or lumber decking on top of your frame. Platinum Decking specializes in outlines or “picture-framing” a feature we do on 100% of Trex and Azek decks, and is optional with wood decks. We’ll lay blocking on the perimeter of your deck, and lay boards running perpendicular to the direction the rest of your deck boards are running.
As you can see in our “After” photos, it adds beautiful character and a unique, finished look to your deck. Platinum Decking will use true decking boards to picture-frame and outline, rather than use the corner-cutting “square top of a fascia board” technique. We have access to every single composite decking color, so we can picture frame with the same color as the main deck or accent with a different composite decking color. Most noteworthy, we have built with every single color and are the best deck builder in Libertyville, IL to help you design your deck idea!
Many couples have lights in their backyard deck ideas. Platinum Decking will also finish your beautiful deck off with some ambiance and style. Lighting is available in a variety of different designs and locations. Riser lights for stairs and post cap lighting are just a couple of many options to certainly make your deck safer in the evenings, and also stun neighbors with its beauty at night. Every homeowner that has Platinum Decking install lights on receives a transformer that gives the homeowner options to set light level (dimming) and setting timers for the lights.
What is Trex Composite decking made of?
In the age of environmental sustainability, TREX decking has taken the lead with its composite makeup. Each year, TREX buys approximately 300 million pounds of recycled plastic materials and also acquires equal that weight in reclaimed hardwood scraps for manufacturing. Those components are ground down into a fine, sawdust-like consistency and combined together to form the strong, dense material.
Compared to some other composite boards on the market, TREX boards are made solid and dense all the way through - like traditional lumber. Contrarily, some lesser grade composite options on the market have a hollowed center with a cap on each end. Each TREX board is made cut to fit and is consistently strong and sturdy all the way through. This is reinforced by using a compression-molding method in production to guarantee strength and durability in each composite board.
How long does Trex decking last?
Resistant to the elements, rotting, insect infestation, and any other natural cause of deterioration, TREX composite boards are proven to last a minimum of 25-30 years - typically spanning much longer. In confidence of the lifespan, you’ll get out of your composite deck, TREX’s 25-year warranty backs up that guarantee.
The main reason TREX composite decking reigns supreme is its ultra-durability; not only maintaining structure over time but also like-new coloration. In fact, maintaining its coloration is one of the main emphases of the manufacturer's warranty.
Best ways to clean your composite deck
One of the most common questions on a homeowner’s mind, when they invest in a new composite deck, is, “How do I keep it clean?” It’s a question that everyone has a “best” way of answering, but there really isn’t just one way to do it. To give you guidance and a lot of options, we’ve put together a list of Q&A’s to get right to the point on your deck-cleaning questions.
Can you power wash composite decking?
Yes, the only maintenance recommended for a composite deck is power washing. This will take care of any dirt/grime buildup you may find on the surface. If your composite deck structure is near a body of water or in a humid environment, you can also use a deck wash solution in your power wash to avoid mildew growth.
Vernon Hills Deck Builder FAQ
Do I need to seal my Trex Deck?
The usual maintenance demands of wood are not necessary for TREX composite deck. These composite boards are self-preserving, due to the recycled plastic and wood material makeup of its fiber – making it resistant to the elements. Additionally, a factory-finishing shield coat is applied to the outer surface of each board, ensuring an easy to clean, scratch-resistant surface.
Traditional wood decking will weather inevitable damage. Moisture exposure, temperature fluctuations causing the wood to constantly expand and contract, and typical wear and tear all contribute to deterioration. The only way to prevent or prolong this is to annually reseal or paint with a wood deck specific product. Although maintenance is effective, you will need to reapply these costly protecting products regularly.
Libertyville Deck Builder FAQ
How often do I need to clean my composite deck?
The only maintenance recommended for your composite deck is an annual power wash of all surfaces. This prevents mildew or mold growth that can develop over time. In regions of high humidity, frequent rain or snowfall, and near bodies of water, minor mildew growth is common and expected.
Although the structural integrity of your TREX deck will not be at risk, power washing will ensure the vibrancy of your coloration and aesthetic stays looking clean and new. This is one of the major factors behind the superior lifespan of composite decking.
Deck Powerwashing and Deck Cleaning
Is composite decking slippery after it is power washed?
Like any smooth surface, if approached carelessly when wet, it may be slippery. However, composite deck boards are formed with a variety of wood-grain textures with a wide range of depths. The Trex wood grain adds traction while maintaining a natural look and feel.
Can you use bleach to clean composite decking?
Absolutely never, ever use a chlorine bleach-based product to clean your composite deck. Not only will it eat away and break down the protective cap on your boards, but it will leave behind a corrosive residue that will continue to damage your deck boards. Although some believe it will kill mold and algae, that theory has only been proven on non-porous surfaces. It will cause your deck major discoloration and disintegration over time.
What can I clean my composite deck with?
The best way to keep your composite deck clean is with a medium-high pressure powerwash. It’s recommended that you hold the tip of your power washer at a steady 1ft distance from the surface while washing, to provide enough pressure to wash away tough dirt buildup, but not risk damage to the surface. Water is all you need to properly power wash your composite deck in most cases. If you’re in an area with high humidity or near a body of water that enhances the growth of mold or algae on the surface, a mild all-purpose soap diluted with water, and applied to the surface with a deck brush, is all you’ll need to do before power washing with water.
Can you clean a composite deck with vinegar?
You can clean your composite decking with vinegar, but it must be diluted with water before application. Most commonly, vinegar is used with baking soda to rid surfaces of mold and kill the food source the mold is thriving off of. This method is recommended for decks in heavy humidity and near bodies of water. Please note that vinegar will harmless hardy plants it comes in contact with, such as hostas, mums, herb and vegetable plants, among others. When using vinegar to clean your deck, use tarps or seasonal plant covers to shield your landscaping from being covered in the vinegar solution.
How do you maintain a composite deck?
The only maintenance necessary for a composite deck is an annual power wash to remove dirt and grime from the surface. This is recommended to keep your composite deck looking clean and prevents any mold buildup that may occur over time. If your deck is in a high humidity region or is near a body of water, it’s also recommended to wash the surface with a mild soap or deck detergent twice a year to prevent mold or algae buildup which is common in those environments.
Can you use Simple Green on composite decking?
Simple Green is a consumer favorite for cleaning composite decking. This wash solution is added to your power washer cleaning attachment, or applied with a wash brush prior to hosing off. Either way, it’s best used for removing tough dirt, grease, or sap from the surface of your composite decking. Most recommended for wooded areas that experience a lot of fallout from surrounding pine trees.
Can you use OxiClean on composite decking?
Cleaning your composite deck with OxiClean is a safe and effective alternative to using chlorine bleach. It will do the same heavy-duty cleaning you’re looking for, without damaging the surface, your surrounding plants, or leaving your composite boards discolored. The easiest way to do this is by adding 1 cup of powder OxiClean to 5 gallons of water and applying the solution to the surface with a flat bottomed broom or scrub brush to lift up dirt and grime from the surface. Use either a power washer or hose with a strong stream to wash the solution off the surface.
What is the best cleaner for Trex decking?
Similar in the process as any other composite decking surface, Trex decking can be cleaned with a simple water powerwash, or with the use of mild detergents. It’s not recommended to use any soaps or cleansers containing chlorine bleach, because discoloration or corrosion will occur as a result. There are many cleaners on the market that are mild enough to do the job without damaging your Trex composite, but the most commonly used are Simple Green, OxiClean, and Meyers all-purpose soap.
How do I stop algae from growing on my deck?
In a lot of climates and conditions, algae growth on your deck is unavoidable. High humidity, heavy tree cover, and is located near a body of water are a few reasons you may be battling algae growth more common than the average deck owner. It is possible to remove and slow down the growth of algae on your deck surface, however. It comes down to removing not only what’s on the surface, but to best as possible remove the ability for growth to keep happening.
Algae can be removed with a detergent solution of 1 part vinegar/baking soda and 2 parts water. Dump solution on the surface with algae growth, and use a large brush to scrub the solution into the surface removing algae, then rinse. Repeat this process until algae are no longer visible on the surface. Repeat the process once more after algae are visibly removed, to ensure there are no microscopic growths left on the surface that will rapidly spread soon after completing cleaning.
What is the best low-maintenance deck material?
When it comes to low-maintenance decking, composite materials are your best bet. Each brand of composite decking made up of different materials, but most have a “cap” – a plastic coating around the deck board. The cap protects the composite from weather and normal wear and tear. While wood requires an annual or biannual stain, composite decking only needs a powerwash or hose wash.
Trex and TimberTech Azek are both industry leaders in composite decking. While both are excellent products, there are some key differences. Azek is 100% PVC, or pure plastic. Meaning that aesthetically it has less of a “natural” look. On the flip side, PVC products come with longer manufacturer warranties.
Trex has product lines that look much more “natural” and “wood-like”. They also have a wide variety of color options. Not only does Trex look more “natural”, but it also comes standard with a 25-year fade and stain warranty. Additionally, Trex boards made of 95% recycled products.
Below are some examples of Trex decking and their 3 major deck product lines. See all Trex colors and product lines here.

Separating ourselves from the competition
Like anything in life, the only way to master something is by practice and repetition. This is the key to our high-level deck construction and deck designing at Platinum Decking Libertyville.
Unlike most contractors in Libertyville, Vernon Hills, Mundelein, and the North Shore area, we only build decks. Specializing in building decks gives Platinum Decking a couple of major advantages over the average contractor or local deck builder.
The first advantage is our ability to master the art of deck building. Since our skilled deck builders and carpenters build only decks year-round, they get a tremendous amount of “practice”. No different than training for a sport, doing the same thing over and over again allows our crews to become great. Platinum Decking has some of the best deck builders in the area, simply because they practice day in and day out.
The second major advantage of only building decks is the ability to achieve economies of scale on decking material. When building a deck, about 50% of the cost is in materials. This means savings on decking materials can be significant if working with the right contractor. Due to the fact that all of Platinum Decking’s revenue and spending is on decking supplies, we are able to negotiate huge discounts with local suppliers. These savings get passed down directly to you and are a direct result of specializing only in deck building and construction.
On the flip side, many deck builders and deck contractors in Libertyville, Vernon Hills, Mundelein, and North Shore area take a different approach. They take pride in being more of a “one-stop-shop” of contracting. This means in addition to building decks, they undertake basement remodels, kitchen remodels, bathroom remodels, siding, painting, and additions. This means, unfortunately, that it is challenging for that company to “master” any of the tasks since they are never getting enough “practice or repetition”. This also makes it challenging to achieve high levels of economies of scale on materials since they are purchasing so many different products.
At Platinum Decking Libertyville, we believe specialization is the key to high-level deck building and deck design.

Libertyville Winter Deck Care
Living in Libertyville or Vernon Hills means you are familiar with harsh winters. Lots of snow and ice cause all kinds of issues around the house. As winter comes, it is very important to protect your deck from the elements. A new Trex deck or pressure-treated wood deck can last you a very long time, but there are a few actions you can take to maximize the lifespan in terms of the winter months. Snow removal is one of those.
There are a few ways to safely and effectively remove snow from your Trex deck, PVC deck, Timbertech deck, or pressure-treated wood deck.
- The first is using a plastic shovel. Metal shovels or plastic shovels with a metal blade can cause surface scratches to your composite cap or PVC cap if you have Azek decking. Additionally, think of your composite or PVC as a hardwood floor. A plastic toy is not likely to scratch it; alternatively, a metal object will. A composite or PVC deck is not different.
- The second method of removing snow from your deck is rock salt or calcium chloride. Keep in mind you need to find a pet-friendly solution if you have pets, but the rock salt will not harm your new Trex deck, Azek deck, or TimberTech deck.
- If you are using rock salt on a pressure-treated wood deck, you will want to rinse the deck off as soon as the snow melts. If you do not, the salt can erode some of your fasteners and could leave a residue on your deck.
- The last way to remove snow from your deck is with a leaf blower. This is very effective if you can blow the snow off a few times as the snow is falling. This will avoid significant build-up that could make removal more challenging.
As your local deck builder in Libertyville and Vernon Hills, it is important that we share our best practices around deck snow removal from our backyard living area.
Timeline To Build a Deck
Libertyville and Vernon Hills area
The length of time it takes to build a deck depends on the type of project. There are two major types of projects: resurface projects, or projects built from scratch.
A resurfacing project is much more simple, and in turn, can save a lot of costs. A deck resurfaces is when we remove the deck boards and railings but leave the existing deck frame in place. A deck resurfaces can only be done when you want to keep the current deck design and the deck frame is structurally sound.
Due to the fact that a deck resurfaces are not altering the existing frame, a city permit is not required, saving additional costs, time and headaches.
A built from scratch project is when we demo any existing deck and start from square one. Starting from scratch enables you to change the deck design and design something exciting and new! If Platinum Decking is building your new deck from scratch, we will help you design the new project and use 3-D renderings to help visualize your new space. We want you to truly see your new outdoor living space before we begin the deck construction.
When should a new wood surfaced deck be sealed?
It may seem like everyone has their own opinion on when to seal a new wooden deck. The truth is, it depends on the age of the person you ask. 30+ years ago, the lumber industry was cutting down old-growth trees to be used for projects like decks. This lumber has an over-saturated advantage of natural oils and preservatives, which means it took significantly longer for the wood to dry out than today’s harvested material.
Today’s lumber is typically from mass-grown lumber farms, which are cut down and processed for sale at a much younger age. This gives the trees less of an advantage in producing natural oils and resins making them weaker against UV penetration, which is harmful to wood decking almost immediately upon exposure. Wood fibers are held together by a natural glue called “lignin”. Lignin is rapidly broken down by UV rays, causing the wood to weaken and split. To prevent this from happening in today’s day and age, seal your new wooden deck surface within 1-2 weeks of construction.
What is a good deck size?
A good deck size is all subject to your preference and space available. The purpose of a deck in your outdoor living space is to enhance the outdoor experience.
There are endless backyard options and deck structures which is important to analyze before constructing. Some of the questions you will likely ask yourself will center around entertainment or aesthetic purposes. Are you building your deck to enjoy on summer evenings with friends or extend the space in which you can entertain? Are you building your deck to have better access to enjoy your koi pond and intricate garden oasis? Or, are you looking to enhance the feel of your outdoor living space to be somewhere you and your family enjoy overlooking a backyard soccer match? No matter the purpose, the size should reflect and complement what your needs are.
Another size component to take into consideration is the coding regulations of your town/village. Quite often there are regulations based on how far a deck perimeter must be from your property line, driveway, body of water, etc. All of which are fairly easy to work around and are taken into account when designing your outdoor living space, but should be kept in mind.
The ideal size of your deck is something that is best discussed with your deck builder, especially if that builder specializes in solely deck construction. They’ll have plenty of experience and knowledge in the area of what size makes the most sense for your outdoor space and what your goals are with enjoying it to maximum potential!
Trex Decking – Scratch Resistant Deck
Do they scratch?
It depends on the type of composite decking you decide to build your deck with. Composite decking typically will not scratch easily but it can scratch. Trex Transcend is the most scratch-resistant and “hardest” composite material on the market. Trex Select and Enhance are more susceptible to scratches. Think of your composite deck as a hardwood floor. Normal wear and tear will not scratch it but a hard metal object will.
Composite decking does not need to be painted or sealed. In addition, there is less maintenance on it. Also, composite lasts longer than wood. Wood decks typically last 10 to 15 years while composite last 25 to 30 years.
