Naperville has been named the No. 1 Best City to Live in America by Niche three years running — in 2024, 2025, and 2026. A big reason for that ranking is the city’s outdoor lifestyle. With over 2,500 acres of parkland, 140-plus parks, 70 miles of connected trails, and the iconic Riverwalk, Naperville is a city built around being outside. If you live here, you already know it. And if you’re planning a deck, patio, or outdoor living space, you’re tapping into something the whole community values.
Centennial Beach — Naperville’s Outdoor Landmark
Centennial Beach is one of the most unique public swimming destinations in the Midwest. It’s not a pool and it’s not a lake — it’s a former limestone quarry that was converted into a public beach in the early 1930s to commemorate Naperville’s 100th anniversary. The quarry holds 6.2 million gallons of chlorinated water, with a zero-depth entry on one end and depths reaching 15 feet on the other. It has been a summer gathering place for families here for more than 90 years.
The beach sits at 500 W. Jackson Avenue, just west of downtown, along the DuPage River. Surrounding the swimming area, there are six acres of open grass, shade trees, a sand beach, Adirondack chairs, picnic tables, and the Centennial Grill for food. There are also water play features for young children, lap lanes, and a diving board complex with 1-meter and 3-meter boards.

The Riverwalk — Naperville’s Crown Jewel
Just steps from Centennial Beach, the Naperville Riverwalk stretches 1.75 miles along the West Branch of the DuPage River. It was built in 1981 to celebrate the city’s 150th anniversary and has since become the most visited spot in the community. The brick-paved paths connect covered bridges, fountains, public art, and gathering spaces — including the Grand Pavilion, the Riverwalk Amphitheater, and the Shanower 9/11 Memorial.
At Rotary Hill, you’ll find the Paddleboat Quarry where you can rent kayaks, paddleboards, and paddleboats during summer months. The Millennium Carillon in Moser Tower rises 16 stories and houses 72 bells. Just outside Centennial Beach, the Rothermel Family Skate Facility and the ADA-accessible Jaycees Playground give families even more reasons to spend the day outdoors.

Trails and Green Space Across the City
Naperville has more than 70 miles of trails connecting parks, neighborhoods, and natural areas throughout the city. Nearly 90% of residents live within a 10-minute walk of a park. Some of the most popular outdoor spots include:
- West Branch DuPage River Trail — A multi-mile trail connecting Knoch Knolls Park, Pioneer Park, Veterans Park, and the Riverwalk, ideal for runners and cyclists
- Knoch Knolls Park — Over 200 acres of woodlands, prairies, and wetlands with a nature center, disc golf, and kayak access
- Springbrook Prairie Forest Preserve — Features 7 miles of trails and a designated off-leash dog area
- Wolf’s Crossing Community Park — Multiple loop trails with scenic overlooks across the entire park
- Nike Sports Complex — A short, flat loop trail surrounding the turf fields
Whether you prefer a quick evening walk or a longer weekend ride, these trails and green spaces make outdoor activity part of daily life here.
The Naperville Park District at a Glance
All of this outdoor infrastructure is managed by the Naperville Park District, which was founded in 1966. The Park District is one of only 1% of park districts in the country to hold national accreditation through the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA). It offers over 1,400 programs annually in recreation, arts, fitness, and environmental education.

Why Outdoor Living Starts at Home
Naperville’s parks, trails, and public gathering spots set the tone for how people live here. But the outdoor lifestyle doesn’t stop at the trailhead. Homeowners across the city invest in decks, patios, screened porches, and outdoor kitchens that extend their living space into the backyard. It’s a natural extension of a community that already spends so much time outside.
If you’re thinking about a new deck or patio project, it helps to understand the local requirements before you start. Naperville has specific building codes and permit processes for residential decks — you can read a full breakdown in our guide to pulling a deck permit in Naperville. And if you’re comparing board options for your project, our post on where to find hardscape and landscape materials in Bolingbrook covers sourcing options nearby.
Choosing the right materials also matters — especially in a climate with hot summers and freezing winters. If you’re weighing composite versus natural wood, our contractor’s perspective on selecting deck materials breaks down the pros and cons of each option.
